About Emsworth: A Guide to This Hampshire Harbour Town

Emsworth is a small coastal town with a big reputation — for its food scene, its harbour, its sailing club, and its strong community of independent businesses.

Emsworth sits at the north-western corner of Chichester Harbour, on the boundary between Hampshire and West Sussex. It is a small town — population around 10,000 — but one with a distinct character shaped by centuries of maritime trade, oyster farming, and fishing. The town's oyster industry, once one of the most productive in Britain, declined in the early 20th century but left a lasting imprint on its identity.

Today, Emsworth is best known for its food scene and its independent character. South Street and the town square have an unusually high concentration of quality restaurants and independent shops for a town of its size. The harbour and waterfront give Emsworth a setting few Hampshire towns can match.

The town has a railway station on the West Coastway Line and is within easy reach of Portsmouth (12 miles west), Chichester (8 miles east), and Southampton (22 miles north-west). Its position in the gap between the South Downs National Park and Chichester Harbour — both Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty — makes it an attractive base for exploring this stretch of the Hampshire and Sussex coast.
